Mercedes A vs B Service
Your Mercedes is carefully crafted and engineered. Some parts, without proper servicing, could wear out and cause expensive repairs or worse, could leave you stranded should you break down on the side of the road. Luckily our Mercedes experts at Swift Motor Services are here to help.
In the late 2000s Mercedes introduced a new maintenance format for their vehicles. They have broken down each service into two types, A and B. This ensures that owners and technicians know which service the vehicle needs to have, and when.
Most of us may not be aware of these different types of services in our Mercedes Benz vehicle and what A and B mean. This is why Swift Motor Services has created a complete guide explaining how we perform our services for our Mercedes customers.
Keep reading to find out more about the Mercedes A and B Service.

Mercedes A Service – What Does It Mean?
Your Mercedes is put on a dedicated service schedule when it leaves the factory. The essential maintenance procedure starts at 10,000 miles and the following checks and maintenance take place:
- Your Mercedes engine components take synthetic motor oil, which is replaced, to ensure effective lubrication and cooling.
- To prevent detrimental particles from infiltrating and causing damage to the engine, the oil filter is also replaced.
- Checking and adjustment of tyre inflation occurs as it is essential for optimal fuel efficiency, prevention of uneven tyre wear and vehicle safety.
- A comprehensive examination of the brake system and its components is undertaken to verify their proper functionality.
- Upon completion of the service, the technician will reset the Mercedes dashboard warning messages and update the service records in the Mercedes system or logbook.
Mercedes B Service – What Does It Mean?
The Mercedes B Service takes place around one year after the A Service. It’s a more in-depth service to maintain and replace additional parts and typically involves:
- Your Mercedes engine components take synthetic motor oil which is replaced to ensure effective lubrication and cooling.
- To prevent detrimental particles from infiltrating and causing damage to the engine, the oil filter is also replaced.
- The cabin air filter is replaced, for your cabin to remain pollen-free and dust-free.
These are the A and B Services in a nutshell. Each one is alternated and performed every year.
A and B Services for Older Mercedes Vehicles
Sometimes older Mercedes vehicles have a number attached to their service warning message. For example, you may see A5 or B7 service appear on your dashboard and alongside servicing components we explored on the normal A and B Service, the technician is also required to:
- A0 or B0 Service – Clean and lubricate the sunroof and renew spark plugs for specific models.
- A1 or B1 Service – Replace brake fluid.
- A2 or B2 Service – Replace brake fluid and perform sunroof cleaning and lubrication.
- A3 or B3 Service – Replace the air filter and renew the spark plugs.
- A4 or B4 service – Replace the air filter, renew spark plugs and conduct sunroof cleaning and lubrication.
- A5 or B5 Service – Replace the air filter, replace brake fluid and renew spark plugs.
- A6 or B6 Service – Replace the air filter, replace brake fluid, renew spark plugs and perform sunroof cleaning and lubrication.
- A7 or B7 Service – Replace automatic gearbox oil and replace gearbox filter.
- A8 or B8 Service – Replace automatic gearbox oil, replace gearbox filter and conduct sunroof cleaning and lubrication.
- A9 or B9 Service – Replace automatic gearbox oil, replace gearbox filter and replace brake fluid.
How To Tell that My Mercedes Needs A Service
A light and message should appear on your dashboard indicating when your next service is due. It also could be located inside your vehicle settings menu. You can access it by going to the ‘Service’ menu on your Mercedes dashboard screen. Then select the ASSYST PLUS feature. This will inform you when you need to take your Mercedes in for a service and will indicate the service required (A or B).

Case Study for a Client Mercedes A Class Vehicle
Our client came to us recently for a routine B Service on their A-Class. They had little time in their busy schedule, and we immediately gave them a courtesy car to ensure they could continue with their day as we got to work.
Our expert team carried out the following work on their vehicle:
- Inspection of the windows, wipers, lights and mirrors.
- Checked the horn, hazard lights, air conditioning and seat belts.
- Assessed the steering, suspension and drive system.
- Examined the brake pads, discs and brake fluid.
- Inspected underneath the bonnet for any faults or leaks.
- If deemed necessary, replace the air filter, oil filter, spark plugs and belts with genuine replacement parts.
- Examined beneath the Mercedes, including removing trays, draining oil and inspecting the transmission for leaks, rust or corrosion.
- Measured tyre pressure, tyre tread and wheel alignment.
- Checked and topped up the antifreeze level where necessary.
- Measured and refilled the engine oil.
- Update the service history.
The client’s A-Class also had uneven brake wear which our expert technicians identified. We replaced the front brake pads after the owner’s permission and made sure the wheels were properly aligned. We helped save the customer money in the long run by identifying issues early.
This coupled with brake disc replacement ensured the vehicle would stop effectively and had even braking pressure across all four corners. The technician also performed an inspection on all suspension components to ensure that this problem wouldn’t repeat itself.
The tyres were precisely topped up to the correct level and the wheels were aligned once more to ensure correct handling and braking. The oil and oil filter were replaced and the service light reset whilst finishing the job of updating the service records for our customer.
Each time we have a customer vehicle in our workshop we follow strict Mercedes guidelines and ensure every service and repair is within specification. Our excellent customer service, care and attention are shown in our reviews and we maintain the highest standards for every customer.
